Beauticians Urged To Use Professional Methods

The President of the Ghana Progressive Hairdressers Association (GPABA) of the Ewutu Bowjiase branch in the Central Region, Mrs Rose Croffie, has admonished hairdressers and beauticians to adopt healthy methods in their profession to enable them to avoid cross transfer of infections.

Mrs. Croffie said this in her closing remarks at a ten-day workshop organised by GPABA in collaboration with the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training for 30 hairdressers and beauticians in Bowjiase.

She, therefore, encouraged hairdressers and beauticians to wear gloves when working, adding that most of the time some hairdressers and beauticians ignored the use of gloves.

The participants were taken through cosmetology skills such as health and safety practices, waxing, client consultations and analysis, hair disorders and treatment.

Commenting on the essence of the workshop, Mrs Croffie said beauticians must upgrade themselves regularly to enable them to cope with the new trends in the beautician industry.

‘There are new things coming up so hairdressers and beauticians need to learn them’, she said, commending COTVET for bringing such an initiative to boost the capabilities of hairdressers and beauticians.

A tutor from the Oyska Institute of Cosmetology in Kumasi, Ms Jane Boakye-Mensah, who took participants through the training said the beautician industry was dynamic and that practitioners must endvour to upgrade themselves.

‘I think that these hairdressers and beauticians need education on certain things. Some even find it difficult handling the tools professionally’, she said.

According to Ms Boakye-Mensah, some of the practitioners in the beautician industry still used to the old methods thus losing most of their clients.

‘They are more used to the old system. That is why they must join the associations to benefit from training workshop like this’, she admonished.

Some of the participants who shared their experiences said the workshop had helped them to learn new things.

One of the participants, Mrs Grace Arthur said the workshop had helped her to overcome some challenges she used to have when performing certain duties.

‘The workshop was very helpful, particularly, learning new ways of approaching some styles that I used to have problems with’, she stated.

Ms Esther Perttey of Smiling Unisex Beauty Salon in Bowjiae, however, appealed to her colleagues in the beautician industry to join GPABA to enable them to benefit from such workshops.
