Akufo-Addo should expect ‘insulting’ salvos – Amaliba warns

Nana Akufo-Addo has set the stage for a campaign of mudslinging for saying president John Mahama is incompetent, a member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Abraham Amaliba claims as he warns the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant to expect insults of same measures to be directed at him.

The 2012 presidential candidate of the NPP described President John Mahama as clueless and incompetent when he launched his presidential campaign Tuesday.

Amaliba indicates describing the president and his office as incompetent is tantamount to an insult.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsfile Saturday, he said those comments by Akufo-Addo are in bad taste, and advised him to ‘purge himself and move away from those comments’, which require that he behaves like a statesman when he mounts political platform.

‘I actually thought that Nana Addo would have grown out of these types of talks. He has fired the first salvo; he should be ready to take salvos when they are directed at himin like manner. Clueless, incompetence, it is an insult, yes it is an insult,’ Abraham Amaliba stressed.

He explained: ‘It is an insult to refer to your president in such manner, what you are doing is debasing the presidency, what you are doing is attacking the foundation of the presidency, what you are doing is telling Nigerians, Lebanese that there is somebody who is ruling this country who is not competent to rule this country.’

He said Nana Akufo-Addo inwardly can attest to the fact that President Mahama is not a clueless and incompetent person having worked closely together as legislators.

Touching on the overwhelming support from NPP MPs and other executives for Nana Akufo-Addo, which some say is in breach of the party’s constitution, Abraham Amaliba said failure of him to distance himself from them is in itself an act of incompetence.

By so doing, Nana Akufo-Addo has portrayed himself as a ‘divisive figure’ in the NPP, he asserted.

‘So if he himself cannot respect the guidelines within his party, how can he respect the general laws of this country, this is an indication of a person who cannot rule this country in accordance with law.’

So I think that his comments are in bad taste, and he should purge himself and move away from those comments, I think that he is now of a statesman standard, he should let that permeate in his utterances when he mounts the political platforms.
