Tension is gradually mounting in Cape Coast, the Central Region capital, over an attempt by President John Dramani Mahama to collapse the Kotokuraba market by the end of August.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that the people in the area had been lambasting President Mahama for neglecting them. They told this paper that the President, sensing that he will be given a showdown when he attends the upcoming Oguaa Fetu Festival, deliberately cut the sod  a few months ago to show that the Kotokuraba market project was about to begin.

According to the traders in the market, they would not sit down unconcerned for the President to cause the demolition of the market when funds were not available for the construction of a new one – a situation they claimed would collapse their businesses.

The Concerned Market Traders Association, who expressed this concern during a press conference at Cape Coast on Monday, challenged Mahama to see to the construction of the proposed new market.

The spokesperson for the association, Maame Ama, expressed concern about the way government had been complaining of inadequate funds to run the country but continues to make promises it cannot accomplish.

Maame Ama bemoaned the situation where the temporary Kotoka market which is under construction, lacks social amenities, saying that had compelled the traders to consult the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Madam Priscilla Arhen, to come and inspect the project.

She further expressed concern about the way the MCE later went to various radio stations to lie to the public that she had sent the traders to the site to inspect the project and that they were happy about the temporary market.

‘Most of us have taken loans and so removing us from the market would collapse our businesses because a lot of our customers owe us and cannot locate us when the market is no more,’ she noted.

A member of the association, Madam Sabina Chineboa, added that the most of the traders   would be in trouble when they were sent into the temporary Kotokuraba market as most of their items could not stand the heat in that market.

Another member, Ekow Awotwe, cautioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) serial callers to stop insulting the traders on radio when they make any suggestions regarding the project.
