Former President John Agyekum Kufuor will speak on the theme, ‘The Role of Religion on Governance’ during the 4 th Ramadan Public Lectures slated at the Holiday Inn Hotel, Airport, Accra.

According to the organizers, the public lecture, which takes place on 3 rd August 2014 between 4 and 6pm, will be graced by many prominent personalities from the two great faiths, public service including Pastor Mensa Otabil.

The public lecture was instituted four years ago as a means of discussing issues of national importance with a view to enhancing public service and above all making the country a better place.

It is an initiative of the Office of the National Chief Imam and the ‘Moslem Youth in Free Enterprise (MYFE) and has grown in stature over the years.

The chairman for the occasion is the Managing Director of Stanbic Bank, Alhassan Andani.

An interesting highlight of the programme is the presence of leading figures from other faiths including representation from the Christian Council of Ghana.

Also expected to attend the lecture are Nana Akufo Addo, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and others from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The programme is taking place at a time when governance in the country has come under various degrees of strain, a situation occasioned by an unusual economic crisis.

The foregone has led to a further polarization of society in a manner which observers think does not augur well for national development.

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), an important think-tank recently spearheaded a programme aimed at seeking the opinions of various stakeholders regarding the concept of ‘winner-takes-all, as the nation appears to be searching for a more appropriate system aside the current marginalization of the opposition and their input in governance after elections.

When the former President mounts the rostrum to discuss this subject in the context of religion, it would be expected that important issues would be raised and perhaps prompt a national conversation considering the vast governance experience at his disposal.
