Blood Centre Staff Donate Blood

Staff of the Southern Area Blood Centre of the National Blood Service last Friday organised an internal blood donation exercise to replenish the depleting blood bank.

The management also inaugurated its first staff donor club to engage the public and demystify the myth surrounding blood donation in the country through frequent blood donation.

Dr Paul Mensah, Head of Accra Area Blood Centre, inaugurating the Southern Area Blood Centre Staff Donor Club, encouraged the members to be active and live by the values of the club, which is to practise what they preach.

He also charged them to hold the integrity of the service in high-esteem and live up to the expectation for which the club was formed.

Stephen Addai-Baah, Public Relations Manager of the National Blood Service, Ghana, said the club was formed as part of the centre’s drive to refill the blood bank.

He said the formation of the club was to showcase to the public who donate blood voluntarily that the staff also do donate blood and help among others to enhance unity among the staff.

‘What we intend doing is that we go out there occasionally to tell people about blood donation and to donate blood in the process, to serve as an example to those who we ask all the time to donate blood,’ he stated.

Mr Addai-Baah also noted that the club would be visiting events and organisations to educate the public about the benefits of blood donation, adding, ‘the idea is that people have this myth about blood donation exercise so the club members will educate them first and encourage them that there is nothing to be afraid of.’

‘A process to let the public know that we have an integrity, we are not just coming to collect your blood and use it for any other thing but we the workers have taken the first step by also donating our blood to stock the blood bank,’ he stated.
