Citizens Must Hold Government Accountable

The public has been urged to participate in the governance of the country by asking those in authority the questions they need to know in their various communities by consulting the appropriate agencies at all times for answers.

This was made known by Mr Oppong Mensah of Social Public Expenditure and Financial Accountability (SPEFA) at the launch of a workshop in Kyebi in the East Akyem municipality of the Eastern region. The workshop was to educate ordinary citizens on their role as far as local governance is concerned and also abreast them with all what they need to know about governance.

He said every individual has the right to know taxes paid are used for hence the need to ask and know what government is doing to make life comfortable for ghanaians in terms of development, health, education and other social infrastructures.

Mr. Oppong Mensah however called on all metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to organise community durbars and educate the public on their activities and what govt is doing to solve challenges they may face.

Municipal chief executive of East Akyem Simon Peter Asirifi on his part appealed to visit the various assemblies to inquire and share their ideas in order to promote the development we all desire to achieve. He said his outfit doors are open to all persons no matter one’s political affiliation or status in the community.

The workshop attracted personalities from the ministry of local government and rural development, Netherlands Embassy, assembly members, traditional leaders and the general public.
