Building for Police Station going waste at Wasa-Atobiase

A GHC300,000 one-storey building put up by the chiefs and people of Wasa- Atobiase in the Western Region for a police station has remained unoccupied since its completion in 2011.

The building was a community project constructed with contributions from the people and District Assembly to attract police presence to the town.

But the chief of the town, Nana Atobra II told Adom News the Ghana Police Service (GPS) has refused to provide its personnel to go occupy the building and protect the time from crime.

He said crime has escalated because several appeals to the GPS to send personnel to the area have fallen on deaf ears.

‘We have over 30,000 people living in this town and other surrounding towns and villages, but we have no police station here to help us deal with issues needing police attention effective. Anytime we need police intervention we have to travel very far to get one and those who do not have money to make that journey give up on getting justice,’ he said.

The chief said the police once went to see the building and had issues with portions of it so they refused to move in, adding that those issues have since been addressed but the police have still not moved in.

‘For the past four years we have been clearing weed and painting the building just to keep it fresh for the police to move in but all promises to send police personnel in have failed,’ he lamented.

The top floor of the building is a fully-furnished two bedroom apartment designed to house the station manager or district police commander and his family. It has its own toilet, bath, dining hall and living room.

The ground floor is designed to be the police station. It has a charge office, three other offices and two cells for male and female, each with water closet toilet facilities.

Assemblyman for the area, Honorable Edward Gyebi also appealed to the Inspector General of Police send his officers to go evaluate the building and consider sending officers to deal with the rising spate of crime in the area.
