Hit-and-run saga: Youth call for arrest of Regional Minister

Police in Upper East Region are dragging their feet to bring the deputy Regional Minister to book, for a hit-and-run incident that has claimed one life, according to youth of the area.

Abuley Kyeka, brother of the deceased, also says although the law is clear about sanctions for a driver who bolts from a scene after hitting a person, law enforcement officials seem to be favouring the Deputy Minister, Daniel Syme who doubles as acting Regional Minister.

The car in which Daniel Syme was driving, knocked down two persons riding on a motorbike around 8pm Thursday, but the minister allegedly failed to stop.

The two victims were subsequently conveyed to the Bolgatanga Government Hospital where the deceased was placed under intensive care.

However, around 2:30pm Friday, 37-year-old Robert Abuley, passed away moments after the deputy Minister paid him a visit at the hospital.

Reports indicated he died from injuries sustained after he was knocked down by the Minister’s vehicle.

The other victim of the accident is said to be responding to treatment at the Bolgatanga Government Hospital.

‘Since yesterday what they [police] are supposed to do, they have not done it’, insists Kyeka Abuley, brother of the deceased.

Albert Sorie, Joy News’ Upper East Regional Correspondent says youth of the area, numbering about 50 massed up at the offices of the Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, demanding that the regional minister be arrested immediately.

Bismark Adongo, one of the youth leaders said on Niewsnight, Friday, a meeting with the Chief Executive and Police Chiefs did not end well.

“We wanted the deputy regional minister be put behind bars because nobody is beyond the law”, said Adongo.

Police say they cannot locate the whereabouts of Daniel Syme, but the youth say they are ready to assist in finding the minister for justice to prevail.
