B5 Plus commits to extend investment in education in Ghana


The inception of DPS (Delhi Public School) Ghana, Tema in the year 2010 heralded an era of quality education and learning aiming for excellence, by providing holistic, modern and comprehensive education right from Nursery through futuristic technology of teaching.

With ‘Service Before Self’ as its motto, DPS Tema seeks to cater for the needs of the children of Ghana and its neighbouring countries.

It certainly was the zeal of a missionary and philanthropist, Mr. Mukesh Takwani and his fellow associates who were urged with the noble vision to champion the cause of education in Tema that could transform the solitary vastness of eight acres of land into a bustling paradise of education.

According to Mr. Takwani, Chairman of B5 Plus, the company is fully committed to extend its current investment in education in Ghana.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL
The School, founded in the year 2010 has become one of the best in Ghana (West Africa). It has three campuses, one academic building, one condominium of teachers’ residential flats and the other for students’ hostel. The school has a total of 370 students on its rolls.

INFRASTRUCTURE – SCHOOL CAMPUS
The school building has spacious classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, computer rooms, audio visual room, libraries, language lab and rooms for creative activities such as art, painting, music, dance, Auditorium and an amphi theatre.

The laboratories give the students extensive practical experience to supplement the theoretical lessons learnt in the classroom.

AUDITORIUM – A ROTUNDA
The school has a modern aesthetically designed, air-conditioned auditorium. It is equipped with the latest sound and lighting systems and can accommodate up to 350 persons. The auditorium is used for various competitions and functions.

MUSIC AND DANCE ROOMS
The school has provision for well equipped vocal music, instrumental music and dance rooms where the students are trained in various forms of performing arts.

LIBRARY
The school has a spacious well equipped library with a large stock of books including Encyclopedias, Fiction, and Reference Books. Every fortnight each child is issued a book from the library.

GAMES AND SPORTS
The school takes special care of physical health and games and sports activities by providing the required infrastructural facilities and coaches for athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, roller skating, table tennis, tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, chess and other indoor games.

The school has a gymnasium and a skating rink. The games and sports activities give every student the opportunity of participating in various kinds of adventure sports while enjoying the benefits of community living.

IT ROOMS
The school provides computer aided learning to all students. There are two computer labs, one each for Primary and Senior Secondary classes. These air-conditioned labs are well equipped with the latest generation of computers and printers. Smart Boards are being set up in all the classrooms to enhance the quality of teaching and learning.

Each classroom is being equipped with a wall mounted 42″ plasma display screen and a computer as well as a whole range of course material incorporating the required syllabus with graphics, diagrams, illustrations and animations in 3D format.

CCTV, PA SYSTEM, FIREFIGHTING EQUIPMENT
Supervision of the campus is aided by the closed-circuit TVs and the public address system, both adding to the quality of infrastructure. Firefighting readiness is also in place.

ACADEMICS
Pre School / Pre Primary
At the pre-primary level, educational programmes based on Montessori philosophy and methods are followed. There are well equipped classrooms, where the tiny tots learn in an informal way with the help of specially designed apparatus under the supervision and guidance of trained and experienced teachers. Special attention is paid to facilitate the physical, mental, emotional and social growth of the child through a series of well-coordinated activities. Every child is allowed to progress at his/her own pace.

Primary and Middle
Primary and Middle
At this stage formal teaching of academic subjects such as English, Hindi / French Maths, Social Studies, General Science and EVS is introduced. Stress is laid on balanced and harmonious development based on a judicious mix of academics, creative art, physical education and educational tours.

Students are encouraged to participate in creative arts such as dance, music and craft.

Secondary Level
Students are assessed by the CCE scheme introduced by the Central Board of Secondary Education. Regular formative and summative assessments ensure continuous and comprehensive evaluation of both scholastic and co-scholastic areas.

Secondary IGCSE and A Level under CIE
At this level, Science and Commerce Streams are offered. The Science stream offers PCM group with Biology / Computer / Science / Art / Design. In the Commerce stream, the students have an option of studying Advanced Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics with Mathematics.

Foreign Languages
Today education aims at being broad-based and eclectic and knowledge of a foreign language is always considered an added qualification. The school has provision for teaching of French and Arabic languages.

Academic Achievement
The school is known for its high academic standard evident from the outstanding performance of the students Class X CBSE Board examination. Out of the four students, two of them have scored the CGPA 10 / 10. The aggregate result is 100% distinction.

House System
The students of the school are divided into four houses, namely Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire and Topaz. The House is managed by Housemasters. The Housemasters select House Captains, Assistant House Captains and Sports Captains. It is compulsory for every student to be a member of a House. The main idea of the House System is to inculcate in our students the essential qualities of leadership, teamwork, co-operation, mutual understanding and self reliance. Various inter-house activities are held for this purpose throughout the year. In addition, each House in every department is given a theme on which the students present the morning assembly as per the schedule.

INTERNATIONAL DIMENSION
The school always aims at grooming our young students to emerge as smart global citizens through a gamut of scholastic and non scholastic activities. Three of its students, Vishal Thakwani, Destin and Khushi Jeaswani participated in the National Level Spelling Bee Competition organized in Accra on 1st Feb 2014. It was an euphoric and jubilant moment when all the three of them reached the top 3 ranks.

Khushi Jeswani lifted the champion trophy and qualified to go to Washington DC to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition. Vishal was the I Runner-up and Destin was the II runner-up. The outstanding performance of the students at this world renowned competition brought laurels to the school.

Another feather to the cap of DPS International is the achievement of its students, Kapila Komarreddy, Inhee and Seo at the MISE Problem Solving Tournament organized under the auspices of the Stanford Educational programme for gifted youths. The trio has been reckoned as the toppers and the overall best students.

As it is customary, the students of DPS Ghana presented a scintillating cultural programme at the Diwali Mela.

REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATION
Republic Day Celebration
DPS International Ghana celebrated 65th Republic day on 26th January 2014 with a spirit of devotion towards Motherland in the Indian Embassy for Ghana. The programme began with the flag hoisting by the High Commissioner of India for Ghana followed by national anthem. The cultural programmes presented by the students were well appreciated by the onlookers.

Hindi Diwas was organized under the enterprise and the patronage of the Indian Embassy in Ghana. Children participated in Speech Competition in Hindi, Poem Recitation and Story Narration Competitions.

The Following competitions were organized:
Spelling Bee for classes I,II,III and IV
Maths Race for classes II and III
GK Quiz for classes IV and V
English Quiz for classes VI to X
Inter-House Basketball Tournament for classes VI to X

Inter-House Roller Skating Competition for classes I to VIII

In its effort to help the children appreciate the divine love of every mother, who has made it possible for their children to see the light of the world, we provided them with an opportunity to demonstrate their unconditional love for their mothers through a bonanza of entertainment such as songs, dances, skit, etc. on the 31st of May 2014.

The year 2013-14 was also marked by a change in a strong growth in enrolments. The school welcomed new students and staff embracing the beginning of a new chapter in the life of the school. This provided the school with the opportunity to celebrate the considerable achievements of the recent past and look forward to new challenges with renewed energy.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT
PS International Ghana enjoys a high level of parental support and participation.

According to Mr. Takwani, ‘We have always committed ourselves to create an environment in the school which helps the young minds to blossom and provide a platform for individual thinking and holistic development of the child’s personality.’

He continued to say that DPS International Ghana will continue to strive relentlessly to impart such an education that opens doors even to the unraveled realms of knowledge and students experience the joys of new-found knowledge and the ability to excel.
