Pupils Sit On Blocks In Class

Pupils of the Amenam Local Authority Primary and Junior High School in Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region sit on cement blocks to learn in the classroom.

This area is a farming community and the school is made up of six blocks constructed with clay.

Part of the roof has been ripped off; the effects of severe weather.

Broken desks which have not been replaced in a long time are also found in the classrooms.

Even pupils in the kindergarten department between three to five years do not have seats at all, and have to carry kitchen stools to school in order to study.

Those who cannot afford the kitchen stools sit and write on piled-up cement blocks.

A teacher of the school, Mr Francis Amanor, acknowledged that the situation is frustrating for the teachers as they watch the children, especially, those in kindergarten struggle to sit and learn.
