The Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Kofi Asamoah has revealed he was nearly lynched when he relayed government’s plea for them to postpone the planned nationwide demonstration on Thursday, July 24, 2014.
Workers across the country from all sectors of the economy, private and public, will abandon their jobs and take to the streets to protest the high cost of living imposed by the John Mahama administration.
Since the day will coincide with the 2nd anniversary of late John Evans Atta Mills, government asked Organized Labour to reschedule the protest in memory of the late president.
They argued that since the late Atta Mills was a peace loving person, a demonstration on his anniversary will be an indictment on government.
But Kofi Asamoah in an interview on Peace FM’s morning show Kokrokoo Wednesday said he was nearly subjected to severe beatings when he relayed government’s message to the workers.
According to him, the over enthusiastic workers are ready to vent their anger on government thus “nothing can stop them”.
The TUC Secretary General maintained that it will be in the interest of government to allow the workers expressed their frustration on the current economic situation.
‘Workers are being laid off because hardship has affected industry and cost of doing business has gone up’ he added.
Kofi Asamoah said they will converge at the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and walk through some principal streets of Accra before presenting their petition to government.
‘The protest will be replicated in all the 10 regions and it will be peaceful and democratic. I believe this will help Ghana’ he stressed.
The TUC boss appealed to employers especially at the private sector to allow their employee join the demonstration.
