KOFI ASAMOAH, secretary general of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has stressed that workers in the country are really peeved and so the Police Administration and the government should not attempt to prevent the mass demonstration that has been scheduled for tomorrow.
According to him, ‘We have held a series of engagements with government concerning the worsening economy and the fact that we have reached this level means that there is a limit to what we can contain.’
He said the national demonstration is to express displeasure and frustration against policy makers whose inimical economic measures had worsened the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian.
He emphasised that the protest would be carried out simultaneously throughout the country as planned.
Mr. Kofi Asamoah said the Police Administration’s directive that labour unions should hold the protests at regional levels rather than demonstrating concurrently would not work, assuring that the demonstration would be conducted in a peaceful manner.
The TUC boss claimed during a press conference in Tema, which was attended by about 300 workers clad in red, that the directive by the Police Administration was not communicated to his outfit; but he heard of it in the media.
According to him, ‘Government invited leadership of organised labour to a meeting to plead with us to postpone the demonstration for the second anniversary commemoration of President Mills’s death which falls on the same Thursday we intend to vent our frustration, but we turned it down.’
The secretary general of the Trades Union Congress has given the assurance that until government meets certain demands to ensure that the economy becomes viable, organised labour would continue to hit the streets about workers’ frustration, which he said, had built up over a long period of time.
