Group damns labour’s ‘indecent’ demo

The leadership of organized labour stand accused of ‘sabotaging and undermining’ government’s economic recovery process as they foist Thursday’s nationwide demonstration on workers.

According to the Reform for Youth Empowerment, even though unionized labour is very much aware of pragmatic steps being taken by government to arrest the worsening economic situation and improve living standard, it want to see government fail.

‘This egomania sponsored demonstration speaks to the growing evidence that unlike ordinary workers, the leadership of Organized Labour is unwilling to sacrifice and support the NDC’s government medium and long- term (pragmatic) economic measures to finding lasting solutions to reoccurring short-term fiscal challenges often occasioned by volatilities inherent in the import market structured economy,’ Ebenezer Arkutu the group’s General Secretary said in a statement.

The statement said it is only out of ‘dishonesty’ that the labour would suggest that the president is insensitive to the plights of workers.

‘It is without controversy and doubt that Organized Labour led by TUC is in indecent haste to see the NDC Government fail – hence the intended nation-wide strike and/or demonstration on Thursday, 24 th July 2014 clearly is meant to sabotage and undermine  the ongoing efforts towards economic recovery,’.

BELOW IS THE FULL STATEMENT
THE 24 th JULY ORGANIZED LABOUR’S STRIKE IS TO SABOTAGE NDC’s GOVERNMENT ECONOMIC RECOVERY EFFORTS

We are by this press statement calling on the leadership of Organized Labour to rescind their decision to embark on a one – day nationwide strike slated for 24 th July, 2014. It is without controversy and doubt that Organized Labour led by TUC is in indecent haste to see the NDC Government fail – hence the intended nation-wide strike and/or demonstration on Thursday, 24 th July 2014 clearly is meant to sabotage and undermine  the ongoing efforts towards economic recovery.

The leadership of Organized Labour embarrassingly by this irresponsible decision is betraying sacrifices of ordinary hard working workers of this country who have resolved to see the NDC Government succeed on the economy – for obvious reasons including job security.

This egomania sponsored demonstration speaks to the growing evidence that unlike ordinary workers, the leadership of Organized Labour is unwilling to sacrifice and support the NDC’s Government  medium and long- term(pragmatic) economic measures to finding lasting solutions to reoccurring short-term fiscal challenges often occasioned by volatilities inherent in the import market structured economy. Over the years which continuously, risks undermining the economic gains and significantly eroding registered improvements in the living and working conditions of workers.

It is for this and other reasons why the NDC Government under the leadership of President Mahama opted for bold economic leadership through Hon. Seth Terkper, the Finance Minister committing itself to unpopular but necessary medium/long-term measures to fixing decades of self-inflicted national economic curse of short-term fiscal challenges. To this end, whilst government on one hand is prudently containing the effects of fiscal consolidation measures and on another hand heavily investing both in policies and economic infrastructures in leading the economic transformation of the Ghanaian economy.

The leadership of Organized Labour cannot claim ignorance of government’s continuous policy measures and concerted efforts in engaging relevant stakeholders including Labour in finding lasting measurable solutions to our short-term economic challenges.

Also, Organized Labour cannot turn a blind eye to the ongoing economic recovery after months of national sacrifices and committed efforts led by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama. The President is more concerned about the immediate challenging conditions of Ghanaian workers in the face of trouble but now improving economy. To suggest through legitimate concerns that the president  is insensitive to plights of workers and/or government’s efforts/responses to the economy is not yielding any good result is a position of dishonesty and disrespecting government’s genuine efforts.

Beyond Hon. Seth Terkper’s consolidated measures in dealing progressively with inflation, interest rates, exchange rate depreciation, currency depreciation as well as managing public debt stock as captured eloquently in the Mid-Year Budget Review 2014 to parliament. The NDC Government understands perfectly that continuous job creation, job security, improve wages, living and working conditions of workers can only be achieved and/or guarantee generally in a stable economy underline by growth and development.

To this end, we wish to appeal to Organized Labour to be realistic in these challenging times and to be supportive of government’s investment determination to build value added export economy, bridging the gap of our current trade deficit of $20 billion and fend off through import substitution our dependence on imports.

LONG LIVE GHANA!!
LONG LIVE NDC GOVERNMENT!!
