Organized Labour strike: Timely and positive – AFAG

The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has endorsed the planned demonstration by Organized Labour describing it as ‘timely and positive’.

In a statement issued in Accra Monday, the group underscored the need for labour unions to pursue aggressive actions to demand their share of the national cake.

AFAG added that considering the deteriorating economic conditions in the country, it is evident President Mahama has lost touch with the people therefore  ‘we call on the TUC to add its voice for the president to resign from post in the midst of this all time mismanagement of the economy.”

ORGANIZED LABOUR STRIKE: TIMELY & POSITIVE
The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) fully endorses the wise actions taken by the Organized Labour led by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on behalf of the suffering working class of Ghana to hold a one-day strike action on Thursday, 24th July 2014. Although government feel otherwise, it is important for the Organized Labour to know that, the majority of Ghanaians stand by their action as a matter of principle.

The level of economic mismanagement under President Mahama is beyond the ordinary. Never in the history of this country have we seen such crass mismanagement except one that can be likened to the worse state of the economy between 1998- 2000 under President Rawlings. Ghanaians are really suffering. The President is bereft and cannot govern this country. Workers salaries have no value.

Certainly labor does not suffer money illusion under existing price hikes. The international community has lost confidence in the president’s governance. This is shown by the drastic reduction in budgetary support. Companies are collapsing and Industries are not hitting their targets as stated by the minister of finance during his midterm review of the budget.

Unreasonably, the high deficit is saddled by high corruption and anti-austerity measures. Why on earth will the president sponsor free vehicles for chiefs under the current precarious economic circumstances?

Flying $3.5 million to Brazil? Spending over $50 million on one off diaper distribution to schoolchildren?? Besides, over $1 billion have been stolen from the BOG vault and the governor and minister of finance are nowhere to answer at the public accounts committee.

We call on the Organized Labour to add its voice for the president to resign from post in the midst of this all time mismanagement of the economy. Indeed it may be at par with the height of mismanagement under corrupt and incompetent Rawlings. No wonder the former president who now is in control of John Mahama’s government remains mute.

Though the one day sit down strike is timely and a step in the right direction, considering the spate of the fast fading wealth and impoverishment of the Ghanaian, we need Organized Labour led by TUC to pursue aggressive actions towards the government. We look forward to more frequent strike actions running from several days to indefinite duration.
