Samuel Sunday being removed from the block making machine

A 20-year-old cleaner at a block factory at Amanfrom, near Weija, lost his leg after attempting to clean an industrial molding block machine during power outage.

The victim, Samuel Forson, who works with Huatong International Company, a Chinese company, according to eyewitnesses, got trapped in the machine when power was restored suddenly in the process of cleaning.

Samuel Forson, aka Samuel Sunday, had his right leg chopped off with bruises on some parts of his body.

He is currently receiving treatment at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

An eyewitness (name withheld), who also works with the company, told DAILY GUIDE in an interview that the incident occurred around 3:00 pm on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Amanfrom, near Weija, Accra.

The victim, who has been working for the company for some months now, was responsible for cleaning the machine anytime work was over.

On Thursday, July 10, 2014, there was power outage in the area and so managers of the company asked the workers to close for the day since they did not know when power would be restored.

After waiting till about 3:00 pm, Samuel Forson climbed onto the machine to clean it but suddenly, power was restored.

Apparently, operators of the machine failed to put the main switch off when the lights went out.

The victim was trapped in the machine for several hours; and it took the efforts of personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service to save his life.

The right leg of Samuel was badly damaged after he was saved and has been amputated.

He was immediately rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for medical attention.

Meanwhile, a police source at the Weija District Police Command confirmed the accident and added that management of the Chinese company had been charged with the offence of negligently causing harm to the victim.

The source said the investigator in-charge of the case had since visited the hospital to obtain the statement of the victim to facilitate investigations.
