‘We will Resist Move To Retain Korle Bu CEO’

Charles Nii Kwadey Offei Palm
The Senior Staff Association of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KOSSA) says it will continue to resist any attempt by the Board Chairman of the hospital, Mr Edward Annan, to retain Reverend Albert O. Botchway as acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the hospital.

The association alleged that Mr Annan still insisted that Rev. Botchway was duly appointed by President John Evans Atta Mills. Therefore, the outgoing Minister of Health, Sherry Ayittey, could not direct him (Rev. Botchway) to step down as CEO.

A statement signed by the President of the association, Mr Charles Offei-Palm, said ‘if the directive of the Minister of Health is ignored or defied by Mr Edward Annan, KOSSA will ensure the enforcement of the minister’s orders and recognise Dr Samuel Asiamah as the acting Chief Executive’.

‘Effective July 24, 2014, KOSSA will ensure the takeover of the CEO’s office and facilities of the office to enable Dr Asiamah to assume duty as directed by the Ministry of Health’, the statement said. Background

Rev. Albert Okpoti Botwey
Rev. Botchway, who was the acting CEO of Korle Bu, was relieved of his duties following a directive by the Minister of Health.

In his stead, the acting Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Samuel Asiamah, was asked to act as CEO, pending the appointment of a substantive CEO. ‘Reconstitute board’

According to the president of the association, Rev.  Botchway was still in office, approving documents and fast- tracking activities that were in his favour, including the recruitment of staff members.

He described the attempt by Mr Annan to defy the minister’s directive as unfortunate, adding that there had been instances of non-compliance of directives from the Minister of Health.

For instance, he mentioned the refusal of the board chairman to comply with the directive that the nine vehicles  bought at over GH¢1 million for deputy directors of the hospital should be returned to the ministry.

‘Our fear is that his continued stay in office may be injurious to the hospital as he is likely to conceal vital information,’ he said.

While commending the outgoing Minister of Health for the decision to remove Rev. Botchway as acting CEO, the association requested the minister and President John Dramani Mahama to reconstitute the board to bring peace and industrial harmony to the hospital.
