It was used mostly for football matches, on club level by Accra Hearts of Oak SC and Great Olympics of the First Capital Plus Premier League while the Ohene Djan Stadium now Accra Sports Stadium was being re-built in 2007.

The stadium which has been swamped with weeds and reptiles has a capacity for 10,000 spectators.

It is named after a former professional boxer and a three-time world champion in two weight classes, Professor Azumah Nelson.
