Beni Lar, a National Assembly member representing Langtang-north/Langtang-south Federal Constituency, has urged the federal government to provide grazing reserves for Fulani Herdsmen.
According to Daily Trust, the lawmaker while speaking in Jos, pointed out that the herdsmen deserved a grazing land as they were the ones responsible for the provision of meat in the country.
“Cattle breeders need an area that is well irrigated where they can feed their cattle so that they will in turn feed Nigerians. Meat is very important to all of us,” Lar said.
Lar, further noted that if the aforementioned suggestion was executed, it would also curb the repeated clash between farmers and herdsmen in her constituency. She expressed optimism that properly demarcated and nourished grazing reserves across the country would halt farmers and herdsmen conflicts.
The lawmaker in a reaction to statements made by some Nigerians, who opined that Fulani Herdsmen does not deserve grazing land said: “All who eat meat should be considerate enough to let go of their land for the source of the meat. Nigeria is blessed with enough land for everybody, and Nigerians should be gracious enough to recognize that the meat that the herdsman provides is for the community”.
Meanwhile, this demand is believed to be part of efforts to curb the repeated deadly clashes between farmers and herdsmen, which usually leaves scores injured with some gruesomely killed.
