Israeli Embassy In Ghana Donates Towards Ramadan

Accra, Ghana, 11th July 2014: The Israeli Embassy in Ghana has presented 200 kilograms of rice and sugar each to the National Imam of Al Sunna Wal Jammat, Sheikh Hajj Umar Imam to support the Nima community and the entire Muslim community towards this year’s celebration of Ramadan. The presentation, held at a short ceremony in Accra was also to strengthen cordial relationship between the two parties.

Ramadan is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar as it commemorates Allah sending the Archangel Jibril (Gabriel) to the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) to convey to him the first verses of the Holy Quran. Every Muslim who is past the age of puberty and mentally and physically fit and observes the month, must fast. The fast starts from dawn and is indicated by the Al Fajr prayer (morning prayer). It ends at dusk and is marked by the Al Maghrib prayer (prayer at sunset). This daily fasting routine carries on every day for the entire month.

Presenting the items to the Muslim delegation on behalf of the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Deputy Ambassador of Israel, Eyal Lampert remarked that’this year’s Ramadan is especially trying for our brothers here in Ghana and we have decided to support them with an additional offering of rice and sugar to be distributed among the community.

For the past years, we share a tradition of gifting the Muslim community in Ghana with rams and rice, to help celebrate Eid-al-Adhar but this year, feeling the needs of our neighbors and friends, we felt we couldn’t wait and wanted to help as well now’.

On his part, National Imam of Al Sunna Wal Jammat, Imam Sheikh Hajj Umar thanked the Embassy and stated that they have embraced the Israeli embassy with open arms and with great friendship. He said the Holy Quran demands that we accept all as one.

Spokesperson of the National Chief Imam of Ghana, Alhaji Ahmed Nii Nortey spoke of the commitment that Ambassador Bar-li has shown to the humanitarian needs of the people of Ghana and the great work that she has achieved during her time here as the Ambassador.

He added that there is the need for strong and clear voice to show how much the Embassy of Israel in Ghana is welcomed and appreciated and that he hopes the embassy stays for many decades to come.
