The Owner of a mobile phone has identified the body of a man who snatched his device.
The man’s stolen phone was used to break the news about his death to his relations, but it turned out that he was alive and that he lost his device to the thief who died later in an accident.
The family could not therefore go ahead with the funeral of their beloved relative after starting elaborate arrangements.
The Odorkor Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) is investigating the intriguing incident, which occurred on Saturday, July 5, 2014 around 10 am when Isaac Asante was robbed of his mobile phone by the man who died afterwards in an accident.
Confirming the story to DAILY GUIDE, DSP Abdullai Mumuni, the Odorkor Divisional Commander in charge of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), said the police received information that a man had been knocked down by a Renault commercial vehicle with registration number GW 9888-13 at Mallam Market area.
When we got to the scene, the driver of the vehicle Benjamin Duku, with the help of some good Samaritans had rushed the victim to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment, he stated.
The police proceeded to Korle-Bu where they met the driver but unfortunately the victim passed on while being treated at the health facility.
Mr Duku then came with the investigator to give out his statement on what transpired and assisted the police to investigate and trace the family.
At the station, an eyewitness brought the mobile phone of the deceased and so the family was asked to report at the station.
The relations, who did not see the deceased, later said the mobile phone belonged to one Isaac Asante and so they went home and reported on Monday.
However on Monday, the family visited the station with Isaac Asante to inform the police that the man who was knocked down by the vehicle was a thief who had snatched his mobile phone.
Isaac Asante led police to the morgue to identify the deceased.
Efforts are being made to trace the family of the deceased who is yet to be identified.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that the deceased snatched the mobile phone of Isaac Asante and bolted.
The suspect was talking on the phone while crossing the road, which resulted in the accident.
The stolen mobile phone however fell on the ground and so some good Samaritans spotted it and returned it to the police to help trace the family.
Family of Isaac Asante, upon hearing the news of the death of their beloved son, arranged for canopies and chairs.
They were mourning the deceased when suddenly he came home to make the shocking revelation of the theft of his mobile phone.
