A 40-year-old man was detained by police on suspicion of rape and appeared in Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday.
It was gathered that John Ogunsola, who lives at 61, Olatunde St., Oke Ira, Ogba, Lagos, lured his tenant’s seven-year-old daughter to his apartment and sexually assaulted her with his finger. The accused committed the offence on May 27 while the girl’s parents were not at home. Later one of the tenants told the girl’s mother about the incident and the matter was reported to the police.

“Ogunsola had, on the fateful day, called the minor to purchase a bottle of Pepsi drink for him. When she arrived with the drink, he told her to bring it to him in his room. He then indecently assaulted her by inserting his finger into her private part,” the prosecutor said.
However, Ogunsola pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Yewande Aje-Afunwa, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of a N2m with two sureties each in the like sum.

The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, and could attract life imprisonment. The case was adjourned till August 7 for hearing.
