Accra, July 9, GNA – The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts on Wednesday inaugurated a 25 member planning committee, to spearhead the preparations of the forthcoming United Nations World Tourism Organisation conference to be hosted by Ghana.

The conference, which is scheduled for September 9 to 11, 2014, will focus on tourism branding and Africa’s image.

Mrs. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, who inaugurated the committee, said the choice of Ghana to host the conference was a demonstration of the World Tourism body’s recognition of Ghana’s efforts to position itself on the world tourism map.

She explained that the hosting of UNWTO International events was a rare opportunity given to UNWTO member countries to showcase their tourism products and services and make the destination visible on the tourism map for the patronage of tourists.

She said Africa’s collective efforts and building on synergies in branding the continent; ‘telling our own success stories, will draw many more from far and near to visit our destination.’

She noted that there was every justification for Africans to work closely with its people to create an African brand which helped to promote the region for vacation, business and investment.

Mrs. Ofosu Adjare stated that the conference would be preceded with a two day seminar to discuss topical issues and case studies to be led by experts for adoption by the delegates.

The Minister of Tourism said, as part of the conference, an exhibition and social programmes would also be organised to showcase the Ghanaian hospitality, rich culture, food and fashion among other things.

‘I have no doubt in my mind that you will bring your expertise and experience to bear in the successful planning of the event, as we inaugurate the National Planning Committee and Sub-committees to commence work today,’ she added.

She, therefore, appealed to Corporate Ghana to be generous in supporting the course and also take advantage of the marketing opportunities to project their businesses during the conference.

The National Planning Committee, which is chaired by Mrs. Ofosu- Adjare, has members from the Ministries of Tourism, Foreign Affairs, Trade and Industries, Transport, Information and Media Relations, Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana Forestry Commission, among other institutions.
