Abura Dunkwa (C/R), July 9, GNA – A total of sixteen educational facilities, made up of classroom blocks and teachers’ quarters in 13 communities in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese (AAK) District of the Central Region, have been completed to enhance teaching and learning.
The facilities, worth thousands of Ghana Cedis, were built with funding from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND), the AAK District Assembly’s Common Fund and the District Development Fund (DDF).
They include a three-unit classroom block each, at Tsetsekasum, Asamadzie, Apewosika, New Ebu and Ansafona , a two-unit classroom block for kindergarten pupils at Empiro, a six-unit classroom block at Sekyerew, with each facility having a Computer room / library, storeroom and wash rooms.
The rest are a two three-unit Teachers’ Quarters each, at Katakyiase, Gyabankrom and Akonoma and a three-unit Teachers’ Quarters each at Aboase, Amosima and Abuenu.
Handing over the projects to the District Education Directorate on Tuesday, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr William Atta Mends, said the schools were selected to ease the plight of pupils in these communities who walked long distances to school.
He said, the projects started three years ago, but abandoned due to the lack of fund, will not only enhance teaching and learning in the district, but also help sustain the interest of the children in the school, and expressed delight for their completion.
Mr Atta Mends encouraged school children in the beneficiary communities to be studious, and make the best of the facilities and also appealed to the district directorate and members of the communities to maintain them.
The Acting District Director of Education, Mrs. Anna Belinda Baidoo, expressed gratitude to government and the Assembly for the gesture, saying it would contribute immensely to the quality of education in the district.
She pledged to ensure that the facilities were well utilized and maintained, and appealed to government to construct teachers’ quarters wherever classroom blocks will be built since accommodation is one of the major problems faced by teachers, especially those in the rural areas.
At Katakyiase where two three-unit Teachers Quarters were handed over, the Headmaster of the Katakyiase Basic School, Mr. Akwasi Aboagye Prah, told the Ghana News Agency that the project was timely, since three teachers had been asked to vacate their current premises by their landlords before the end of the week.
He said the facilities will contribute greatly to the academic work, adding that when teachers live close to their schools, they monitor school property and also report to work early.
