Gov’t to introduce pre-paid water system for ‘effective’ revenue mobilisation

The Minister of Water Resources Works and Housing, Collins Dauda has said a pre paid water system is ‘one of the most effective or efficient ways of getting revenue to make commercial State Owned Enterprises viable’.

This he says will enable the Ministry to secure loans with its own resources without having to rely on government.

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) announced a decision to introduce pre-paid metering system by the end of this year.

It is hoped that the introduction of the prepaid metering system will curtail the commercial and physical losses incurred by the company.

According to the GWCL, a pilot project to test the system will soon take off  in some parts of Greater Accra and Ashanti regions.

Collins Dauda also stressed the need for full support of the general public for the project to be successful.

He therefore tasked the GWCL to undertake sensitization programmes towards full implementation of the initiative.

Meanwhile news of pre-paid water metering system has received mixed reaction from the public.

While some think it’s a good initiative others have objected to the idea, saying problems facing the GWCL are not financial but administrative.
