REPORTS reaching DAILY GUIDE indicate that over 35,000 students of the Ghana Nurse and Midwife Trainees Association (GNMTA) across the country will today storm the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra to demonstrate against the government over its failure to pay their two years accumulated allowance.
According to a statement issued by the president of GNMTA, all student nurses across the country have been also reliably informed to gather at the Obra Spot to embark on a massive peaceful demonstration through Adabraka, Rawlings Park, then to Ministries in a procession amidst brass band and police escort at 10:00 am.
The association has further entreated all authorities to allow the students to fully comply with the directive since it would not take it lightly with anyone who infringes on such legal right of the students.
Emmanuel Geyevo, the National President of GNMTA in a press statement issued and signed at Koforidua last Friday said, ‘We are going to declare a nationwide strike against the government for the delay in the release of clearance letters and delay in the payment of long overdue trainee allowances.
‘We try as much as possible to continue dialoguing with the Ministry of Finance to make sure that some amount of money is paid to our training nurses.’
They added that the NEB of GNMTA by the power vested in it by the Parliament of Ghana ‘as a registered association decree that all students should cease going to work in the various hospitals and health centres across the country until further notice.’
The association finally noted that they would only rescind their decision if government addresses their concerns.
However, the Ministry of Health (MoH) has expressed its disappointment over the industrial action being declared by the association.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of MoH, Tony Goodman, in an interview with an Accra-based radio station expressed his shock at the association’s decision to go on strike in spite of the assurance from the government to pay their allowances.
