Castro Is Dead; Drowns With Girl

DEAD! Castro and Jane
News broke in Accra yesterday afternoon about the death of hip-life artiste, Castro, who reportedly drowned in the Volta River at Ada Foah after a failed attempt to save a drowning female friend believed to be his lover.

Early reports said Castro De Destroyer was cruising in a Ski Jet on the river with the lady when she fell into the water and in his attempt to save her, he also drowned.

According to reports, rescuers managed to retrieve the lifeless body of the lady soon after the incident, but it took well over five hours before that of Castro was found.

The accident reportedly happened near the Ada Estuary and the entire area had to be cordoned off by the Marine Unit of the Ghana Police Service that led the search operation.

Known as Theophilus Tagoe at birth, Castro was said to have joined his friend Asamoah Gyan, captain of the Black Stars, on a weekend rendezvous outside Accra, moving from joint to joint until they landed at Ada Foah.

Asamoah Gyan Hospitalized
Asamoah Gyan, on hearing the sad news, fell into a state of shock and had to be rushed to the hospital. He was however treated and discharged.

It is characteristic of Asamoah Gyan to sponsor close friends and family on such merry-making trips whenever he is in Ghana for holidays.

Castro, while on the trip, was said to have hired the Ski Jet and went cruising with the female friend when the accident happened.

Even though Castro was wearing a life jacket, the current was too much for him to keep afloat, leading to his untimely death.

One report said the lady was not wearing a life jacket and was seated behind the musician when she suddenly fell into the river, prompting him to dive into the water in an attempt to rescue her.

Another report had it that the lady’s Ski Jet crashed and she fell into the river and in the process of saving her from drowning, Castro  jumped into the water and met his death.

Castro, in January 2010, had a secret wedding at Swedru and very little is known about his Canadian-based Ghanaian wife, Awura Abena.

The musician was given the name Theophilus Tagoe at birth in 1982 and is currently rated one of the biggest musicians in Ghana.

His ‘Odo Pa’ track, which featured Asamoah Gyan, won the Best Collaboration of the Year at the recently held Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) and another collaboration he did with Sarkodie, ‘Adonai,’ is still topping music charts on both radio and in the clubs.

News of his death shocked the creative arts fraternity and many celebrities took to social media to express their condolences.

Castro hails from Takoradi, and was born in 1982 to Lydia Tagoe, a trader and Mr Coffie, an accountant at the Takoradi Harbour.

He attended Anglican Primary and J.S.S in Takoradi, and started singing at the tender age of 10.
