One of the attacks was reported to have taken place at Hindi trading centre in Lamu county, and the other was at Gamba area of Tana River county.

This is the second time Lamu county has been attacked in two months. Last month 65 innocent souls lost their lives.

Interior ministry spokesman Mwenda Njoka said: “There were two attacks in Lamu and Tana River last night. In Lamu we have nine people dead and in Tana River we have 20. The number could rise.”

An al-Shabab affiliated radio station had said they where the source of the attack which occurred at the Lamu, a former tourist spot.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack at Gamba.

Al-Shabab’s military spokesman Abdulaziz Abu Musab had last night claimed their agents conducted an attack in Kenya saying: “The attackers came back home safely to their base.”

Al-Shabab had last month attacked Mpeketoni in retaliation for Kenya’s military presence in Somalia and also had attacked Somali’s MP’s this week.

Kenya’s President, Uhuru Kenyatta, however, claimed that it was local political networks who killed because of ethnicity and not al-Shabab.
