Pressure group Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has challenged President John Dramani Mahama to step down for what they describe as his ‘inability to absolve himself from various corruption charges levelled against him.’

AFAG’s call comes barely two days after a letter with the Presidency’s letterhead and the President’s signature alleging his resignation started circulating on social media. The Ministry of Information and Media Relations has swiftly debunked the allegation, describing it as a hoax.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, minister of Information and Media Relations described the letter as a ‘total fabrication and the product of criminal machination.’

However, AFAG thinks the hoax notwithstanding, the President should step down. ‘Indeed, it is obvious that the President has been overwhelmed by the high tide of corruption rocking his government this failed administration under their tenure have supervised very expensive and highly inflated costs of contracts, inefficiencies in governmental operations and the unconscionable misuse and abuse of state resources,’ AFAG stated in a press statement released on Wednesday.

The statement signed by seven AFAG chieftains including its President, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye indicated that if the President did not relinquish his seat they would have no choice but to invoke provisions in  Article 69 of the 1992 Constitution which spells out impeachment procedures of a sitting President.

Article 69 (1) states that the President shall be removed from office if he is found to have conducted himself in a manner prejudicial or inimical to the economy or the security of the State.

‘AFAG hold and support all mass movements, which can draw sufficient attention to the international community to consider piling sufficient pressure on the President to resign. Enough is enough,’ AFAG stated.

‘This is the most challenging period of our generation, with no jobs and no hope, piling on debts, and massive corruption The time is now for us to stand up and be counted. It is our God-given responsibility to rise up to the occasion.’

According to the pressure group, the President has succeeded in plunging the economy into a mess and subjecting the good people of this country to such great ridicule.

The group cited several instances to back their allegations of corruption against the President.

The first example was the infamous Umbraer jet that President Mahama – when he was the Vice President between 2008 and 2012 – led a negotiation team to purchase.

Apparently, the jet which was meant to cost $28.5 million was purchased at an ‘astonishing’ sum of $88million. ‘Mr. President, your inability to purge yourself off these vicious allegations, has probably broken down the so-called moral high ground set by your party founder leading to all time mass looting of public money,’ AFAG challenged the President.

The group also cited the dubious judgment debts, profligate spending and a general sense of economic disarray in the past couple of years, as its basis for calling for the head of the President.

‘These actions are inimical to the economy in this regard; AFAG is calling on you to resign from post. Mr. President, you will save this country a great deal to resign. In this difficult moment, it’s not a show of muscle; it’s an appeal to your conscience. You have failed Ghanaians woefully,’ the group charged!
