Sharing Sanitary Pads? Mahama has lost it – Atik Mohammed

The Peoples National Convention’s (PNC), Atik Mohammed says it is ‘absurd’ for government to supply sanitary pads to adolescent girls in less privileged schools under the guise of improving access.

According to him, the initiative is an attestation that the Mahama-led administration has lost touch of the bread and butter issues confronting Ghanaians.

Parliament on Wednesday approved a 156 million dollar World Bank loan facility to finance the Ghana Secondary School Education Improvement Project.

The loan will among other things be used to fund the construction of community Senior High Schools across the country, provide scholarships for students in deprived communities and the distribution of free sanitary pads to school girls.

This has been met with stiff opposition with many questioning government’s priority in accelerating the growth of the educational sector.

But the Ministry of Education has justified its actions insisting that the distribution of the sanitary pad is to prevent school dropouts.

In a riposte, Atik Mohammed on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday said the Mahama-led administration has ‘lost it’.

He noted that needs of the educational sector is quality, affordability, accessibility, teacher motivation and not sharing of pads.

The PNC man indicated that sharing sanitary pad to students is an expenditure which does not give value for money- a useless venture, he hinted.

‘Absenteeism has always been a problem but since Mahama has lost it, he will always concentrate on petty and trivial issues’ he added.

Atik Mohammed said he was convinced government is clutching at straws to remain relevant in Ghana’s body politic.

‘Very soon government will be investing in panties’ he ridiculed. Story by Ghana/Adomonline.com/Adwoa Gyasiwaa
