Nursing Trainees Declare Strike, Plans Demo For July 1


The National Executive Board (NEB) of the Ghana Nurse & Midwife Trainees’ Association (GNMTA) has officially declared a nationwide strike and demonstration for its members across the country. This is their attempts at drawing the government’s attention to their plight which include delay in the release of their clearance letters and further delay in the payment of long overdue trainee allowances.

In a strong worded notification signed by its National President Emmanuel Geyevo, to its members on Friday, the NEB of GNMTA states that its action is based on the power vested in it by the Parliament of Ghana as a registered Association.

It has therefore ordered that all their members should ‘stop going to work in the various hospitals and Health Centers across Ghana from 1st July 2014, until further notice.

According to the notice ‘All students are to gather at the Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra for a massive peaceful demonstration through the principal streets of Accra with Brass band music and police escort as a way of registering their displeasure to government.’

The Association entreats all their local Authorities to urge their students to fully comply with the directive since it will not take it light with anyone member who’ll go contrary to the agreed directives.

It states that ‘All must treat this as a matter of utmost priority with zeal and courage,’ stating further that ‘anybody who will be caught going contrary to the directive would be dealt with.

Other signatories to the release include, National Public Relations Officer, Abroso Rabbi, National Press and Information Secretary, Ebenezer Fosu, as well as all Zonal President of the Association.
