Court to rule over Finance Ministry’s failure to pay GETFund

Court to rule over Finance Ministry’s failure to pay GETFund

The Fast Tract court will later Wednesday, rule on a suit filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Youth Activist, Richard Nyamah over the ministry’s failure to settle all debts it owes Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).

Richard Nyamah has filed an Ex- parte motion praying the court to compel the Ministry of Finance to settle its accumulated debts.

He says the Ministry since 2013 has failed to pay the compulsory percentage of VAT returns into GETFund account as stipulated by law.

He is therefore asking the Ministry to pay all debts it owes GETFund

This he claims has halted the GETFund’s expansion of infrastructural development and sponsoring of Ghanaian students studying abroad.

The GETFund is a public trust set up by an Act of Parliament in the year 2000.

Its core mandate is to provide funding to supplement government effort in the provision of infrastructure and facilities within the public sector from pre- tertiary to tertiary level.

Earlier this year students on government of Ghana scholarship scheme in the United Kingdom (UK) said they were going through difficult times due to the failure of the GETFund to settle their bursaries.

Some claimed they were on the verge of being sacked from their various Universities due to non-payment of their fees and allowances.

The NPP Youth Activist is hopeful for a favorable outcome of the ruling.
