Women ICT For Empowerment Training; South Ghana Take Turn


The Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence In ICT (AITI-KACE) in collaboration with the Women’s Commission of the Ghana Union of Professional Studies (GUPS) is set to organize the 3rd South Ghana edition of the specialized training in ICT for women (AITI CHIX) in the tertiary institutions of Ghana from 25th-26th of June 2014.

The two day workshop is part of AITI-KACE’s ongoing project to equip women with ICT skills and knowledge to enable them make impact in the society. Earlier this year, a similar training was held at the Tamale Polytechnic for the Northern sector with 120 participants from 6 institutions. The focus is on smart learning tools, business opportunity, creativity and the transformational role of IT as a means to women’s empowerment. This year’s project is designed to equip the young Ghanaian woman with ICT skills and empower her to have interactive web presence, be productive and develop an entrepreneurial mindset.

The content of the training program will cover emerging trends in ICT, online collaboration, business opportunities, online safety, web presence, social media including learning tools such as Delicious, Skype, and Ustream. At the end of the programme, participants will be ambassadors on their respective campuses to reinforce and share the knowledge they acquire.

Participating institutions will include the Ghana Institute Of Journalism (GIJ), The African University College of Education(AUCC), University of Professional Studies (UPSA) and the Ghana School Of Survey and Mapping(GSSM). The rest are Zenith University College (ZUC), Ghana Institute Of Languages(GIL), Institute Of Business Management and Journalism and the University College Of Management Studies (Accra and Kumasi Campuses).

Speaking ahead of the workshop, the Director-General of AITI-KACE, Dorothy Gordon explained the rational behind the series of training programs, ‘AITI-KACE is committed to bridging the Gender Digital Divide considering that the use of ICTs can empower women to make valuable contributions to Ghana through academic and professional work.
