Country Hospital Wins Best Private Hospital Award

One of the popular hospitals in the Ashanti region of Ghana, Country Hospital has been awarded as the best Private hospital in the Region for the year 2013 by the Ghana Health service.

The Ghana Health service has an award scheme which is instituted to honor well performing health facilities in the country for their contributions towards quality health delivery and working in consonance with the Service’s mission and vision.

Country hospital has performed incredibly since it started its operations some 25 years ago in Kumasi, the Capital of the Ashanti region. It has grown rapidly and has now given birth to Abenkyiman Hospital at Anwia Nkwanta which is the first hospital in the region to practice professional telemedicine where several doctors across the globe get connected through an internet facility, to diagnose and treat patients.

In an interview with the C.E.O of the Hospital, Dr. Kwame Antwi, on the achievement, he expressed the belief that his hospital was adjudged the best because it has and does all it takes to be called a quality hospital. Thus, the hospital provides a wide range of medical services through professionals who work day and night and observe no holiday. And the hospital has a well equipped diagnostic center which aids better treatment.”Our staff take all patients as clients and treat them with much dignity and respect, and we have a patient friendly environment” he added.

The C.E.O of the County and Abenkyiman hospitals on a hint at their way forward announced that County hospital will soon be a referral center, which would be the second in the region after Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where currently, all referral cases are sent to.That plans towards this move are far advanced. He hopes that that accomplishing that aim will help reduce the pressure on KATH and would save many lives which would have been lost due to less and late attention at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Dr. Kwame Antwi however expressed disappointment in the government over what he calls ”discrimination against the private hospitals”. He stated that the private hospitals in the country get no support from the government though they also provide health care to the same Ghanaian as done by the government hospitals.

”The government has some policies that bring down our work. One of those policies is that government has restricted students of Senior High Schools from donating blood to private hospitals. Meanwhile, the blood we take from them are used to save lives of Ghanaian, and sometimes, some of the government health facilities like KATH come to us for blood when they are shot of it” he bewailed.

Dr. Antwi who is also the Ashanti regional secretary for the Society of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners has called on the government to support the the private health facilities, at least in the areas of subsidized drug prices as provided to the public facilities and the provision of some hospital equipment.
