The National Theatre in collaboration with Institut FranÃ§ais in Ghana has launched a production of a dance piece-based on the late Efo Kodjo Mawugbe’s drama: ‘In The Chest Of A Woman’.
The dance project titled, ‘Queen and King’ is an artistic cooperation between Ghana, Ivory Coast and France, which is centred on common values of sharing, transmission, emergence and creation.
The play has been categorised into three areas namely; training, production and diffusion, which would materialise in musical contemporary afro-play with four dancers and two musicians on stage.
Speaking at the launch, Mr Nii-Tete Yartey, Artist Director at the National Dance Company, said it is going to begin in Ghana with audition to select artistes for an improvisational workshop at the National Theatre.
He said four artistes would be selected in Ghana and travel to Ivory Coast to join four other artistes from the workshop to begin work on the dance which would be premiered in Ghana in March 2015.
He explained that while in Ghana, dramatist for the project would work with the resident drama group of the National Theatre, while rehearsing on a tentative piece titled, ‘Black Boxes’ also derived from Mawugbe’s other plays and novels.
Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, said the form and content of the project fits perfectly into the grand agenda for the sustainable development and promotion of the creative arts in Ghana and abroad.
She expressed optimism that the planned auditions for the various segments for the project would be carried out in a fair and transparent manner so as to attract the best crop of artistes for the most beautiful rendition of the choreographed pieces.
The Minister appealed to the private sector and the donor community to support the project with cash and in kind in other to make the project a reality.
Stephanie Soleansky, Representative of Institut FranÃ§ais Cultural Affairs for the French Embassy, said they are glad to support the project based on the work of an outstanding writer and personality.
She said it is also a platform to give an opportunity to international audience to discover his plays.
