Robert Pollock, a mining consultant, was reported to have resisted attempts by the suspected armed robbers to rape his wife who was carrying an eight-month-old baby, when one of the criminals allegedly used a harmer to hit his head severally.
He was said to have become unconscious and was rushed to the Nyaho Medical Centre in Accra, but due to his deteriorating health condition, he was later referred to the Intensive Care Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where he died on admission.
The deceased left behind a Ghanaian wife, Georgina Pollock and two daughters – with the younger child delivered three days before Mr. Pollock’s death.
Pollock, who had stayed in Ghana over 16 years, was suspected to have died out of internal bleeding from the hammering of the head, piercing and beatings he received from the purported six-member gang of criminals.
The robbers were reported to have made away with unspecified amount of money – in both local and foreign currencies – jewelries, ornaments made of gold, most of them with Gye-Nyame symbols on them as well as appliances such as LED television sets, tablets, iPad, laptop computer, mobile phones, among others.
The deceased’s Toyota four-wheel drive was allegedly used to convey the items from the house but was later abandoned on the Tema-Accra Motorway without the stolen goods.
Superintendent Kwesi Ofori, Dodowa District Police Commander who confirmed the incident – which occurred May 3, 2014 at about 7:00 pm – to DAILY GUIDE, explained that the robbers, wielding offensive weapons, and noticing how well secured the deceased house was, waylay in a nearby bush opposite Pollock’s residence.
Pollock, who was returning from work that evening, was intercepted in an isolated area at Afienya where they held his family hostage.
Following the robbery incident, the Afienya and the Dodowa District police, with assistance by the Tema Regional Police Command and the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of the Police CID intelligence, arrested the perpetrators of the heinous crime with evidential value and put behind bars.
Morgan Martin Martey, a 28-year-old self-styled businessman who is believed to be the gang leader and two other suspects, were charged with conspiracy and robbery when they were put before a Tema court. Martey was granted bail.
Together with other suspects, he had been slapped with a fresh charge of murder.
