Ten suspects arrested in Bimbilla raid as death toll rises

Ten suspects have been arrested in the murder of the Overlord of Nanumba, Naa Andani at Bimbilla in the Northern Region, Thursday.

The police will not give the identities of the suspects except to say they are expecting to arrest few more suspects.

The death toll in the Bimbilla raid has increased to five, after one more person was confirmed dead at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, later Friday.

Some assailants said to be in police uniforms raided the palace of the Overlord and opened fire at the occupants killing three on the spot [including the overlord] and injuring several others.

The latest violence is believed to have been triggered by disagreement over where to bury a rival chief.

The police have described the incident as murder and have sworn to hunt down the perpetrators.

The Director General of the Police Administration DCOP Nenye Ampah-Bennin said they have made inroads in the investigations into the murder incident.

“Ten people have been arrested and we are expecting to arrest a few more,” he said, adding there was no conflict. These people just marched into the palace and murdered the chief and his people, he added.

He said they have put up barriers at vantage points to prevent other suspects from escaping.

The family of the overlord is livid with the DCE, the police and army commanders who it accuses of doing little to prevent the raid.

But Ampah-Bennin said he would not hurt the sensibilities of the family, except to assure them that the police would do all it can to arrest all perpetrators involved.

Asked how the perpetrators managed to get police uniforms for that raid, as has been reported by eye witnesses, DCOP Ampah Bennin said investigators are on the ground to ascertain the veracity of the allegation.
