Queenster Pokuah Sawyerr
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona East in the Central Region, Queenster Pokuah Sawyerr, last week Friday distributed a set of mathematical instruments each to the 1,455 final-year Junior High School (JHS) students writing the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in her constituency.
In addition, the MP, who is also the Deputy Central Regional Minister, is providing the candidates with some meals each day throughout the period of the examination, which ends today, Friday June 20, 2014.
Ms Sawyerr, popularly known in her constituency as Maame Pokuah, on Monday visited all the five BECE centres in the constituency namely, Swedru, Kwanyako and Nsaba Presbyterian Senior High Schools, Akrabong and Mankrong Nkwanta.
According to the MP, her visit was to see at firsthand how the BECE was being conducted and possibly offer assistance to surmount any challenges. She also wanted to ensure that each student was fed.
At the Agona Kwanyako centre, Ms Sawyerr took part in distributing the food to the candidates during the lunch break.
At all the centres, she interacted with the students and offered them some advice.
‘Don’t do anything that would give the examination authorities any cause to have problems with you, such as cancelling your results,’ the Deputy Minister charged them.
She therefore advised them to do independent work, assuring that ‘those of you who excel can win scholarship under the Maame Pokuah Fees Programme.’
She explained that the programme was a scheme with which she supports parents to pay the fees of deserving children in senior high schools.
Ms Sawyerr said currently there were 250 beneficiaries of the scheme. ‘My constituency is rural and deprived and most parents are unable to provide the basic needs of their children, hence my decision to support the children and, for that matter, the parents, during the examination,’ the MP said when asked about the motive for her gesture.
She added that it was also meant to motivate the candidates to come out with good grades.
