FG Should Try And Dialogue With Boko Haram – NBA President

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA President, Okey Wali yesterday told Jonathan’s administration to try and talk with Boko Haram insurgents to achieve peace and end the bloodshed in the nation.

Wali was talking in the Nation’s capital Abuja, giving a valedictory session of the Supreme Court in honour of the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa.

He revealed that this might be the only way to achieve true peace in the troubled Northern region.

He said: “Like they say, issues are better discussed unresolved than resolved un-discussed; too many issues are begging to be addressed and we keep shutting our eyes to the obvious.

This is why the NBA has continued to advise that the President engages the insurgents and never let-off because of the intransigence of the insurgents. That way, we will most probably get to the bottom of the matter,” Mr. Wali said.

He then later went on to say that Boko Haram exists in three different kinds – the political Boko Haram, the religious Boko Haram and the criminal Boko Haram.

He cites that the FG might break the cycle of bloodshed caused by the insurgents by trying to find out their ideology and proponents of the ideology.

He gave examples of how foreign governments dealt with terrorism, saying the Obama administration in the U.S. exchanged five Guantanamo Bay detainees for one American Sergeant and former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair had the 1998 Good Friday Agreement to resolve the Ireland Revolution Army, IRA, insurgency in the U.K.

He concluded by saying: “Everyday, the Chibok girls and other victims are away from their families and are somewhere nobody knows, that is hellish for the girls and their families,” .
