The Minister of Health has been directed by Parliament to furnish it with the report on the missing babies at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
After investigations, the ministry issued a report on the saga last week enumerating some recommendations which included the suspension of two midwives at the hospital for the roles they played in the controversial missing babies case.
Family of Suweiba Mumin, mother of one of the missing babies, has threatened to go to court to seek justice, claiming a report by the committee which investigated the matter failed to establish the whereabouts of her baby.
In Parliament today, Majority Chief Whip, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, in whose constituency Suweiba resides, reiterated that the investigations by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Medical and Dental Council failed to answer a critical question about the babies’ whereabouts.
He said in view of that error the ministry’s report needs further interrogation by parliament to inform a workable solution going forward, Joy News’ parliamentary correspondent Elton John Brobbey reported.
The Speaker of Parliament Doe Adjaho also asserted that babies missing after delivery cannot be accepted under any circumstances.
He therefore directed the Health Ministry to submit a copy of the report to parliament so that the select committee on health can study it and report back to the house.
Based on the committee’s report, a member will move a motion for a thorough debate in the house on the issue, Elton gathered. The house would then take a decision whether to accept or reject the report.
Meanwhile, Minister of Health, Sherry Aryeetey told a press conference Tuesday that the criminal aspect of the matter has been handed over to the Attorney General’s Department for further investigations and possible prosecution.
