Yaw Preko backs Kwesi Appiah to give Jordan Ayew a start in USA game

Jordan Ayew steals the show against South Korea with a hat trick

Former Black Stars striker, Yaw Preko is urging Black Stars Coach Kwesi Appiah to hand striker Jordan Ayew a starting role in Ghana’s opening World Cup Group G match against the USA; the former Kumasi Asante Kotoko head trainer believes the Olympique de Marseille attacker impresses at training.

Jordan Ayew came off the bench in Ghana’s final pre-World Cup friendly against the South Korea and bagged in a hat-trick to aid the Black Stars to a 4-0 victory over the Asians after the 22-year-old replaced injured Abdul Majeed Waris, beating a 15 year jinx for Black Stars players when he registered first a hat-trick in a competitive international game since 1999 when Yaw Preko scored three times in Ghana’s 5-0 win over Eritrea at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The former national star, now the assistant coach of the national under-20 male team [Black Satellites] is therefore expecting the 53-year-old soft-spoken coach to feature Jordan Ayew against USA if the player impresses at training.

‘There is no harm in trying .The boy can run! The boy is dynamic. He is always in movement and you need an attacker with those qualities. He is just coming from a hat-trick and his confidence is high. There is no harm in trying because I heard Waris is injured so we don’t have any attacker to help Gyan up front,’ Yaw Preko told Power FM.

‘The only attacker we have who can support Gyan up front is our attacking midfielder which is Kevin-Prince Boateng. It depends on his training- what he does at training. We have to use him. I think that is the reason why we took him there. We didn’t take him there for him to just sit on the bench. We took him to go and play so if is the time for him to play I don’t have a problem with that because I think he is up to the task. If you don’t use him, you won’t know his qualities’.

Ghana play the USA on Monday before facing Germany on June 21 at the Estádio Castelão in Fortaleza, and close their Group G campaign at the Estádio Nacional against Portugal on June 26 in Brasilia. Abdul Majeed Waris is likely to be ruled out of the Black Stars opener against the USA, meaning Coach Kwesi Appiah would have three attackers Asamoah Gyan, Kevin Prince Boateng and Jordan Ayew to rely on.
