Kaymer climbs rankings, Compton into top 75

The German began the tournament in record-breaking fashion, becoming the first player to open a major with two scores of 65.

He maintained his lead despite a 72 on Saturday, and ultimately prevailed with considerable comfort following a closing 69 at Pinehurst.

Kaymer’s nearest challenger, Erik Compton, is the big climber in the rankings as a result of his best major performance.

The 34-year-old, who has had two heart transplants and ended 2013 as the world number 362, finished tied for second with Rickie Fowler and has moved up 114 places to 73 in the rankings.

Adam Scott retains top spot after sharing ninth place at Pinehurst, the Australian finishing a shot behind world number two Henrik Stenson.

The only change in the top 10 sees Jordan Speith move up to ninth at the expense of 2013 US Open champion Justin Rose.
