Super League leaders St Helens beaten 42-0 by Catalan Dragons

The French hosts produced a superb second-half display in Perpignan as St Helens failed to score in a Super League game for only the second time in their history.

Catalan only led by eight points at the break, but then ran in six tries in the final 24 minutes to make sure of an emphatic victory, winger Mike Oldfield starring with a hat-trick and centre Vincent Duport crossing for a double.

Saints’ defeat meant Nathan Brown’s team missed the chance to go three points clear of Leeds Rhinos, who were dramatically denied a win on Thursday as Tom Briscoe saw a last-gasp try ruled out by the video referee for obstruction in a 24-22 home defeat to Huddersfield Giants.

At the other end of the table, Bradford Bulls ended a week in which they had an appeal against their six-point deduction rejected with a 46-18 loss at Salford Red Devils.

Braces from Junior Sa’u and Rangi Chase helped Salford to an easy win, which means that second-bottom Bradford are now eight points adrift of safety following Wakefield Trinity Wildcats’ 18-10 victory over winless bottom club London Broncos.

Wigan Warriors avenged their Challenge Cup quarter-final loss to Castleford Tigers with a 46-6 win at the DW Stadium that saw them leapfrog Daryl Powell’s men into third.

Powell penned a new five-year deal at Castleford on Friday, reward for his work in transforming a team that had been battling at the wrong end of the table in recent seasons.

The biggest win of the weekend came as Hull FC destroyed Widnes Vikings 56-6.

Winger Callum Lancaster, 17, and full-back Jamie Shaul each claimed hat-tricks as Lee Radford’s men crossed for nine tries in all.

Elsewhere, Hull Kingston Rovers were on the wrong end of a heavy defeat, succumbing to a 34-4 home reverse against in-form Warrington Wolves.
