Is she hiding an injury? Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce withdraws from New York meet

Fraser-Pryce, the overall 100m and 200m champion in the athletics series in 2013, is reportedly sidelined by shin splints, although event organisers failed to disclose the injury in a statement.

“We’re sorry to report that Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, working to regain fitness after a minor injury this season, has withdrawn from the meet. Shelly-Ann, best of luck for the rest of the season and we hope to see you next year,” the statement read.

Fraser-Pryce won the season’s opening 100m event in Doha.

New Zealand shot-putter Valerie Adams will be in New York, chasing a seventh consecutive Diamond League event win.

Adams has claimed both events so far in 2014, as the two-time Olympic gold medallist chases yet another overall victory in the field event.

Other events to take place in the women’s division include the 1500m, the 3000m steeplechase, the high jump, the pole vault, the triple jump and the javelin.

In the pick of the men’s events, in-form American LaShawn Merritt will be hoping to add to his two victories from three races in the 400m this season.

Merritt preceded his win in Rome in 44.48 seconds in June, with a thrilling photo-finish defeat in the Prefontaine Classic in May to Kirani James in a time of 43.97.

The narrow loss denied Merritt a clean sweep of the three events, but the two-time Olympic gold medal winner can atone in New York.

Other competitions include the men’s 200m, 800m, 400m hurdles, the high jump, long jump and discus.
