Protest in Kano

Supporters of the first son of the late Emir of Kano and those of the former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Lamido Sanusi clashed at about 10.30am at the Emir Palace Road and Kofar Nassarawa.

The protesting youths made bornfires on the roads in Kofar Nassarawa and on both sides of the Emir Palace Road but they were dispersed by security operatives.

Not long after, they regrouped again and attacked one another but the clash was brought under control by heavily armed policemen who once again arrived and brought the situation under control, cordoning off the roads.

The Public Relations Officer of the Police State Command, Magaji Musa-Majia, who confirmed the incident said normalcy had been restored to the troubled areas, while also advising members of the public to go about their business without fear of molestation.

This however did not disrupt the presentation of the appointment letter and staff of office to Sanusi, which took place amidst tight security at the African House located within the Kano State Government House.

The absence of members of the immediate family of the late Emir did not go unnoticed.

Following the announcement of former CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the new Emir of Kano state, some aggrieved youths took to the street on Sunday, June 8, protesting from Kofar Nassarawa to the Government House but they were halted mid-way by law enforcement agents.

There were reports that Sanusi was sneaked out of his house after the announcement as the Kano state government received intelligence report that the Federal government was making plans to arrest him to prevent his coronation.

The opposition party, All Progressive Congress (APC) had accused the People’s democratic party for the wave of violence in Kano after Sanusi was announced as the new Emir.
