There was pandemonium yesterday, June 9 at about 11.a.m. in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State following multiple sounds of horrifying explosions caused by expired batteries of solar street lights.
Residents were gripped with fear, scampering for their lives as they mistook the explosion for Boko Haram attack.
Their fears were further heightened as security forces deployed to the area also fired sporadic gunshots into the air, to scare off the terrorists believed to have detonated the explosion.
Residents, who initially spoke to journalists, had claimed the area was under attack by members of the Boko Haram sect who had stormed the area and detonated explosives before engaging security agents in a gun-duel.
Confirming the incident, a top security personnel who pleaded anonymity said there was no attack in Dikwa but rather people got scared following an explosion which was caused by faulty solar batteries for street lights.
“Immediately after the ‘blast’ troops in Dikwa fired friendly shots into the air and the residents mistook the development and fled. Many people took to the bushes because they thought our men were engaging the terrorists. I want to assure you that normalcy has returned,” he said.
Due to incessant attacks by Boko Haram in different parts of the country, many have been rendered homeless. Reports surfaced online that most of the men and women have been turned into beggars.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian military reportedly killed about 50 Boko Haram sect members over the weekend in a foiled attack on villages in Borno and Adamawa states.
