Debut win: Vern Cotter pleased with Scotland intensity against United States

Tim Visser and Stuart Hogg crossed for tries as the tourists recorded an ultimately comfortable win in Houston on Saturday.

While Scotland were guilty of a number of errors, Cotter believes there were plenty of positives to take from his side’s display.

“I was pleased that, even though there were mistakes made, there was still the intention to keep playing and keep pressure on the opposition,” said the New Zealander.

“I’m pretty pleased to see the opportunities created and we will be working on how we get over the line and score more points.

“We scored three tries and didn’t get one scored against us, so it is a good basis to work from.

“We can improve everything. It’s our first run together and this result will give us confidence.”

Captain Greig Laidlaw was particularly happy to see the United States restricted to just two penalty goals.

“The most important thing to come out the game was we never got scored against,” said the scrum half.

“That was very important; it was good to put a marker down in this first game.”

Scotland face Canada next weekend and will hope for positive news on a number of players who suffered injuries against the USA, including Hogg (nose) and Jim Hamilton (ankle).
