The first of three Tests gets under way in Jamaica on Sunday, with the hosts out to make a positive start under new captain Denesh Ramdin.
Anderson will have been confident heading into the series after impressing in the Indian Premier League for Mumbai Indians.
The powerful left-hander hit 265 runs in the competition at an average of 29.44, including a stunning 95 unbeaten to fire Mumbai into the play-offs.
His hitting power was in evidence against the Windies in January as he smashed the quickest-ever ODI century – from just 36 deliveries – in a memorable Queenstown triumph.
However, he will not take to the field in Jamaica after the Black Caps revealed on their official Twitter account: “Corey Anderson has been ruled out of tomorrow’s first Test in Jamaica with a strained neck. The starting XI will be named at the toss.”
The injury gives New Zealand coach Mike Hesson a further selection headache, with wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi and off-spinner Mark Craig hoping to make their Test debuts.
