Man Arrested For Nearly Killing Student Who Bullied His 9-Year-Old Son
After learning that his 9-year-old autistic son had allegedly been bullied by an 11-year-old boy, a California father reportedly stormed onto a school bus and beat up the older boy.
According to the police, the father, Burnis Hurd, brought his son onto the bus with him on Friday morning. The son then identified which boy had been bullying him.
Both boys are enrolled in the special education program at Wilson Elementary School in Richmond.
Richmond Police Lt. Mark Gagan states that the father “grabbed the 11-year-old by the hair, pulled hard and raised the child out of his seat, then shoved him on the side of the bus where the window meets the wall.”
The 11-year-old boy came away from the incident with a cheek abrasion and a gashed earlobe.
The 44-year-old father reportedly was not satisfied by simply physically hurting the child.
Police say that Hurd went on to threaten to kill the 11-year-old boy, as well as to use threatening language against some of the other kids on the bus.
Notably, the bus driver failed to break up the situation. In fact, the bus driver did not even report the incident, which was also not captured on video tape.
Instead, the 11-year-old told the principal of Wilson Elementary about the incident; district officials say that the principal then reported it to authorities.
Hurd is currently in jail on $50,000 bail. He is facing charges of child abuse and bodily injury to a child.
Shanika Moses, the 11-year-old’s aunt and guardian, has reportedly indicated that she wants Hurd to be “prosecuted to the fullest.”
