Investigate briefings on energy situation – Clergy tells Mahama

The Concerned Clergy Association of Ghana (CCG) is urging president John Mahama to institute inquiry into all briefings he received on the country’s energy situation.

According to the CCG, some technocrats may deliberately be withholding vital information on the actual energy situation, in their attempt to cover their inefficiencies and negligence.

A statement signed by Spokesperson for the group, Bishop Prince Benny Wood, said the development could also be a plot to embarrass leadership of the country.

This the CCG claim could be the reason for the many failed promises by the president to ending the power crisis.

The Association therefore is convinced the inquiry will determine “whether what he [president] was told was all the truth that there was at the time he was told”. The report should made public to mitigate the growing anger and hopelessness that some Ghanaians are attaching to the energy situation, the release suggests.

The religious leaders also want the president to “review the performance of Heads of the various officers in charge of the plants that produce energy for the country”.

The power producers have recently announced a shortfall in the generation capacity of their plants, forcing the Electricity Company of Ghana – the distributor- to ration power supplied to consumers.

It is unclear how long the current load management programme will last as Ghana continues to rely on inadequate and inconsistent gas supply from Nigeria coupled with the delay in the completion of the local gas facility by the Ghana Gas Company.

“We believed that the President meant well when he said the Dumsor Dumsor will be a thing of the past based on the information available to him but it doesn’t look like that will be the case anytime soon.

“To be handed down another time table for power outages in the midst of the economic challenges may not augur well for the economic revival we are all praying for,” the CCG fearfully stated.
