MP Challenges Ministry For Diverting DDF Monies Into Street Naming

The Member of Parliament for Jaman South, Mr Yaw Maama Afful has challenged the decision of the Local Government and Rural Development Ministry to direct District Assemblies to use donor funds for a street naming project.

According to him, every year there is an assessment done throughout the assembly system in the country.

Those who pass are given a sum of money under the District Development Fund (DDF) for investment and capacity building for staff of the assemblies.

According to the MP, recently when those monies were transferred to the assemblies they were directed from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to write a cheque of GhȻ30,000 each, bring it to Accra and then pick up some equipment meant for street naming.

This, he said defeats the purpose for which the money was granted. “That money was not meant for street naming.”

“The grant from the donor communities was meant for investment and capacity building for staff of district assemblies,” he said.

He has therefore decided to file an urgent question in Parliament, asking the sector Minister to explain why monies meant for capacity building was being diverted.
